I don’t get a lot of sunrise pictures but this day in mid-November had a neat sunrise.
The New Hawthorne Market Starts 21 June

And in case you can’t see it on the otherwise lovely fliers, it will be at 43rd and Hawthorne, next to the Common Grounds coffeehouse. What it is is a handfull of folks who are urban farming in SE and Sellwood, who can’t afford to or are otherwise not inclined to go through the regular Farmers’ Market system as run by and through "the Man." It will all be super-fresh and super-local (or Ultra-Local, as I like to call it) and super fun. In fact, there is supposed to be a band – I dearly hope they don’t suck, and have high hopes, as a professional optimist.
And no, we won’t have avacado or citrus, as the art on the flyer might suggest. We’ll be selling the crops that are in-season and grow within a few miles of the market without any truly extrodinary measures — that includes a lot of things. It’s every farmer for her or his self — no leader, no real rules other than those of good neighbourliness and the love of good food. We’re all just going to do what seems right and see how it turns out. It is Hawthorne, after all.
In fact, the lists of produce that the SE Urban Farm Collective has in-season already are so diverse, you can evern expect some varieties that the farmers have bred themselves that you wouldn’t see anywhere else. Our produce list for that first week will include many of the items we have now, with some notable additions. You can see this week’s list at the Up-to-the-minute Sellwood Garden Club Produce Page.
Kat and I will both be there, giving out our own personal recipes, selling some berries from the big farm and talking a blue-streak about urban farming in SE Portland. Also, we’ll be finally and really connecting with the real food eaters rather than just restaurant folks. Seriously, this is a great way to support a way of life that is testing out the margins that we may all find ourselves in. Were it not for a few folks who started farming in SE because they were hungry, there might not even be an urban farm movement in SE – which *really* is the hotbed of Portland’s UF movement (take that, NE).
So, come out to Hawthorne on the Solstice (it is Hawthorne, after all) and every Sunday afternoon thereafter for fun, the freshest food in town, revolutionary business models ala Argentina and the hottest farmer chicks in Portland.
Have your picture taken with a hot chick farmer and the vegetable of your choice for on Sunday, 21 June at the New, Hawthorne Urban Farmers’ Market. We’ve got lots of ideas and with this setup, we can do them.
Sadly, this photo points out the limitations on the otherwise trusty lens on the iPhone that I’ve been using as a wifi device, sans SIMM card or carrier bill. Look at how the document image bends at the edges — so sad.
