Approach to East Saltoun

Contemporary Saltoun is very much the creation of a single family, the Fletchers of Saltoun Hall. They purchased the estate in 1643 and over the next two centuries the family established concerns as diverse as mills, bleachfields and brickworks in addition to contributing to communal infrastructure: the Church spire was the gift of General Fletcher in 1805.
This is a photograph of the approach to East Saltoun from the north. The settlement lies near the top of a slope with a church on one side of the street and several quite substantial houses on the other side. The settlement is well treed and is surrounded by agricultural land.
The first mill in Scotland to make pearl barley was built at Saltoun by James Meikle in 1702. It was built for Henry Fletcher, who sent Meikle to the Netherlands to learn the necessary skills. Andrew Fletcher, Lord Milton, continued to develop local enterprises by laying out a bleachfield.
